A short-stay visa to Thailand in 2026: step by step

A short trip to Thailand in 2026 is still relatively straightforward, but the rules depend on your passport, length of stay, and purpose. Incomplete documents or the wrong visa type remain the most common reasons for a refusal.
Which option fits
For tourism, a short business visit, or seeing family, you usually choose between visa exemption (if your passport qualifies), visa on arrival, and a tourist visa obtained in advance from a consulate or via e-Visa. If you plan to stay longer than 30–60 days, a visa issued before travel is almost always more reliable than counting on an extension after you arrive.
Meetings, site visits, or negotiations are not a tourist purpose. You need the matching category, or you will face questions at the border or when you try to extend.
Documents to prepare first
- A passport valid for at least 6 months with blank pages
- The application form and photos that meet consulate rules
- Proof of itinerary: accommodation and return or onward tickets
- A bank statement or other evidence of sufficient funds
- For a business trip — an invitation from the Thai side
Consulates look at consistency, not just a checklist. Booking dates must match the stated stay, and the bank statement must cover living costs. Screenshots from booking sites are often rejected: confirmations should show the applicant’s name.
The interview
You will be asked why you are going, where you will stay, and what you do at home. Keep answers short and aligned with the form. Mismatched dates, job details, or addresses are a classic reason for refusal. Do not volunteer a six-month relocation plan if you are applying for a short tourist stay.
Before you fly
After approval, check the visa validity, number of entries, and permitted stay. Border officers may still ask for a return ticket and hotel booking. If someone else compiled the file, compare it with the consulate’s current checklist — requirements change during the year.
If the real goal is work, study, a company, or a long move, a short-stay visa is not enough. Map the route before you apply, rather than trying to fix status after you land in Thailand.
